The recent Beowulf movie was an ambitious attempt to create digital and realistic characters. The main problem is to recreate such a fluid motion that the people in the cinemas would believe it real. For this reason motion capture (MOCAP) systems are a must. The skeleton of the hero is moved using a real actor and not by “artificial” animation done with a stroke of the mouse. However motion capture systems are able to obtain information from a set of points in 3D where the markers are overlaid. For instance many of the soft tissue deformation or the flexing of muscles are still made and correct manually.
